Liturgy, Worship and Parish
Life
There
are two worship services on Sunday: 8:00 a.m. and
10:15 a.m. Both services are Rite II and include
music. This summer we are celebrating "full
communion" by worshipping together at one
service at 9:00 a.m. During the school year a
dedicated, gifted, self-directed choir enhances
our second worship service. Dedicated to
"growing in faith, love and praise," we
use a blend of hymns and praise music. And our
choir occasionally treats us to "spirituals
Sunday."
One
of the things that makes worship lively and
meaningful at St. Anskars is variation.
There are many resources available to us within
the Anglican tradition that we use in our
worship. For example, last summer, we celebrated
Morning Prayer with Holy Communion, using
metrical settings for the canticles in familiar
tunes. We use all four Eucharistic Prayers over
the course of the calendar year, as well as the
resources available in Enriching our Worship and
The New Zealand Book of Common Prayer. Excellence
in preaching that applies scripture to our daily
lives is a critical component of our liturgy.
There is much lay participation at both services,
featuring lectors, acolytes, chalicists, and lay
eucharistic ministers serving shut-ins. Our altar
guild not only prepares the altar with linens and
vessels, but also serves as facilitators for
weddings and funerals.
At
present a group of parishioners is working
together on a healing ministry and will begin
holding a healing service once a month that will
be open to the public starting this fall.
